The Poetry of Science competition is open to both established and unpublished poets who are either residents of, or part of, the Cambridge, MA community. By registering and entering this competition you hereby accept the rules and conditions outlined below.

Anyone over 18 years of age can enter the competition with the exception of “Our Team” and their immediate families. Judges are not permitted to enter into the competition.

By entering the competition, you agree and acknowledge that The Poetry of Science is permitted to receive your registration data.

The Poetry of Science may publish any material you submit, post, upload, email or otherwise transmit to it or to the website at its sole discretion and it shall be entitled to make additions or deletions to any such material prior to publication.

Any poem submitted to the competition may be used in part or in whole by The Poetry of Science, and its media partners, for marketing and promotional purposes of the competition only. You hereby grant The Poetry of Science a non-exclusive, irrevocable license in each Entry throughout the world in all media for any use in connection with the competition.

Conditions

Entry must be submitted online at the following website: https://poetryofscience.submittable.com/ following the on-screen instructions carefully. Concrete (shape) poetry is not accepted. Entries are limited to five poems. Entries will not be accepted unless submitted via the official contest channel. Entries not submitted through the proper channel will be deleted. Submissions will not be accepted once the deadline lapses.

You may submit up to five poems.

Files must meet the following specifications:

- .doc, .docx, .pdf

- Lastname_Firstname_Title_of_Entry.doc (or Lastname_Firstname_Title_of_Entry.docx or Lastname_Firstname_Title_of_Entry.pdf)

- Example: Avedon_Richard_American_Hero.doc

All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party. The entrant must be the creator and sole copyright owner of all poems entered.

By submitting their work, entrant warrants and represents that: (1) they/she/he is the sole creator of the work and the sole owner of the copyright in and to the work and has the power and authority to enter into this agreement and grant the rights granted hereunder; (2) the work does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any prior contract, assignment, pledge or lien, and the publication of the work as authorized hereunder will not subject The Poetry of Science to any claims of interference with contract or infringement of rights previously granted to another party or violate any non-compete, employment or other agreement to which the entrant may be subject. Entrant will indemnify, defend, and hold harmless The Poetry of Science and its shareholders, officers, employees, agents, licensees, and assigns from and against any and all awards, judgments, damages, liabilities, settlements, losses, costs and expenses (including attorneys’ fees) arising out of or incurred in connection with any claim, action, suit, or proceeding based on the breach or alleged breach of any of the foregoing representations and warranties.

Winners' names and images will be published online.

Right of Refusal

The Poetry of Science reserves the right to refuse inclusion of any writing of those who fail to deliver a signed copy of the agreement provided upon submission acceptance. The Poetry of Science reserves the right to disqualify false or plagiarized submissions or submissions suspected of being false or plagiarized and refuse inclusion of or to delete at any time any work that may violate any copyright, right of privacy, right of publicity, or other right of any person or subject to The Poetry of Science’s liability. All details relating to the publication of the Work will be at the sole discretion and control of The Poetry of Science.

Use Rights

By publishing an entry, The Poetry of Science expects First North American Serial Rights. The Poetry of Science will also archive all Work online at http://thepoetryofscience.org. All rights revert to the poet after their piece is first published online. Poets must agree to cite The Poetry of Science in all future publications of the work.

Copyright holders grant The Poetry of Science unlimited non-exclusive use of all or part of their accepted poem for activities in all media, including social media, online and print, in relation to the contest and all promotional activities without any remuneration being due.

Copyright holders of all awarded images grant The Poetry of Science non-exclusive use of low-resolution pictures on our website.

Poems will be used strictly in connection to the awards and related images, and will not be used for any other marketing purposes other than to promote the contest and winners. Poems will not be resold or used by any other third party. If there is a request for such, we will forward that request to the poet via email.

To promote winners, The Poetry of Science is granted the right to display accepted poems on social network websites (on our official profiles), including Twitter and Instagram.

You agree to participate in related publicity and to the use of your name and images for the purposes of advertising, promotion and publicity in connection with the competition without additional compensation.

The Poetry of Science and its media partners assume no responsibility and are not liable for any poetry misuse by external third parties.

Prizes

Each selected poet will be awarded two prizes:

  1. A $75 cash prize. Cash prizes will be paid in USD. There are no alternatives available for prize winners. The prize must be collected by the winner and is nontransferable.

  2. Publication in a dedicated issue of Spry Literary Journal. Publication will comprise the original work created by the poet for The Poetry of Science, as well as a headshot and third-person biography. Spry Literary Journal will promote published work through their social channels.

Each winner will be contacted via the email address provided during entry. If no response (including signed agreement) is received after 14 days, a new winner will be selected and the previous winner will forfeit all rights to the prize and as a selected poet.

Judging

Entries will be judged by nominated judges. Images will be judged on artistic merit, originality, subject, and style. The decision of The Poetry of Science is final. The Poetry of Science reserves the right to disqualify any entry that is deemed inappropriate or does not conform to stated contest rules.

Entrants in violation to the above will be removed from the contest, stripped of any prize(s), and banned from entering future contests.
